Last Thursday, my husband and my son went on a "town adventure". They rode the bus! Now, Z-boy has lived out in the sticks his entire life and never gone anywhere that offered him mass transit in any form, so for him this was BIG deal! He didn't believe daddy that he could get on the bus here and get off at the mall. So off they went, catching the bus two blocks from our house. Z-boy had to carry a backpack in case they got anything while they were out. They visited Toys-R-Us and walked over to Moe's for Mexican food, then took the bus back to the main transfer station. Learning that they had lots of time to kill, they walked up the hill to the public library and looked around in there. Then back on the bus and home.
When I got home, I was immediately accosted when I walked in the door. "Mommy, mommy! When is the utility bill going to be here????" This was asked with great excitement. As far as I'm concerned, I'd love to never get one again.... but all came clear when I asked him why he wanted to know. We can't get library cards until we have proof that we live here in this county now... like, a utility bill. We haven't gotten around to changing our driver's licenses yet and haven't gotten any bills here yet. I'm sure eventually they will come - then it will be off to the library to become official patrons!
He even has his first book to borrow all picked out.
Living in town is much more interesting than he thought it would be!

Oh yeah, Z-boy is going to love it! I knew he would. I bet he'll have an opportunity to make swell new friends too.
I hope he gets over his embarrassment over the rocket science t-shirt. I think it's hilarious. Perhaps more kids in his new place will get it, and know it's perfectly okay to not only be smart, but to make fun of being smart at the same time.
We were just at the library yesterday. My daughter said to me, "So many of my friends don't read, but I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have a book to read every day!"

I concur! Although I don't seem to have much time for reading these days. I can't wait for a cool evening to sit on my tree-house back deck with a cup of tea and a good book.
Z-boy is doing several science-y camps this year. This week it's Galaxy Exploration (rockets, ironically). Next week is Prehistoric Party (dinosaurs). Then he has a couple of weeks off before returning for Crazy Contraptions (building with legos, kynex and other things) and SpyKids.
He is LOVING being able to talk us into going places because it's not such an ordeal anymore.
As a teacher, it warms my heart to hear of students who are excited at the idea of reading:)
