Sunday Afternoon Updates...

I know it's been a few days... not that there has been nothing blog-worthy going on, but I've been busy/exhausted and frankly, without words for a few days.

First, my Mom is all in a tizzy because when I went back to church last week, I wrote about it in draft, published a couple of other posts, THEN went back, finished the post and published it. It showed up on last Sunday's date, behind the other posts I'd made since. She's afraid no one will read it, so if you're interested in my first visit to church in a very long time, scroll down to last Sunday's entry...

Second, the landlord showed up out of the blue to spend the night a couple of nights ago. No phone call, nothing. I was extremely pissed. He showed up, slept in the basement (per usual) and left in the morning. Weird. Had a meeting or something, so when he left, the basement was as much of a mess as ever. As you may know, I've been trying to get my house ready for the holidays (ha! they're here already...) but have had no where to put our stuff that was supposed to be stored in the basement and has been sitting in our living room since June.

After he left, I'd had enough. I spent the entire day on Saturday down in the basement boxing things up, dusting, moving things around and clearing a space to put MY stuff. I also vacummed, discovering that most of the floor (yellow, ex-shag carpet that's been there since the 60s) downstairs is covered in mouse shit. Old shit, but still... It's a wonder the landlord doesn't get ill sleeping down there with his head mere inches from the floor on the mattress he keeps down there. I vacummed it up as best I could, but I draw the line at cleaning the carpet at this time. If we buy the house, that carpet GOES! Along with the crappy wall board and the doofy acoustic-tile ceiling.

I then began moving my stuff down there. Boxes of books that I wouldn't unpack unless we were staying, and boxes of odds and ends that we don't use in everyday life. The futon mattress from the defunct bed in Z-boy's room. The livingroom is clearing out as fast as I can haul stuff downstairs. I quit trying to use the dolly - stuff just fell off it and down the stairs or I strained muscles trying to keep it all together, so now I just roll the boxes down...

I've missed something along the way...your landlord gets to sleep over whenever he wants?

I'm glad that you reclaimed your living room! I need to reclaim mine from--well, okay, from my own clutter and boxes stacked with nothing. sigh.

I admit, it's a strange arrangement... When he moved out, he left a bunch of stuff behind. He's a lawyer and the amount of paper and files down there were amazing. And you can't just toss it! So he was coming up about once a month and "clearing" stuff out and sleeping down there (there's a full bathroom). Only most of the stuff he was clearing out was jars of nuts and bolts, and miscellaneous bits of metal or concrete. Not much paperwork that I could see. We're supposed to be able to use the downstairs and can't. Then he said he wouldn't be back until February. Well, our lease is up in June - at which point we either buy the place or find somewhere else to live. And I realized that if we're going to have a life here until June, I needed to get some stuff done so we could use the living room.
