Fun Monday - I've got a crush on you...

I groaned inwardly when Jo Beaufoix requested that we talk about our first celebrity crushes. I mean, come on! How am I supposed to remember that far back? My mind isn't what it used to be, ya know... And crushes? Definitely a thing of the past. Though I do admit to sending emails to my pal Suze at work with pictures of George Clooney (her second husband-to-be) with something bordering on glee. If Georgie ever knocked on my door, I'd send him down the road though. He's already spoken for.

But, where was I? Oh, yeah. MY celebrity crushes.

Much of my childhood, my father worked at the popular local AM station - Top 40, baby! This was pre-FM (though we were on the forefront of that as well, with the first Top 40 FM station in town). He was forever bringing home duplicate albums or things he didn't think the audience would like. I got first crack at them. So I was introduced to a wide range of artists that I knew before everyone else did (like 10cc, the DeFranco Brothers, Yvonne Elliman and Neil Diamond) or artists that never quite made the big time, but had some rockin' music (The Bay City Rollers).

My favorite one of all though, was Bobby Sherman. Bubble-gum pop, but so yummy! And his album cover was really cool, with a complete-the-sentence wheel built in.

Poor Bobby never really hit the big time and I can't remember a single song he did - but I sure did love him back when.

Neil Diamond, though... I still love him and his music. My favorite music purchase last year? A greatest hits compilation on CD for my car! Cherry Cherry and Forever in Blue Jeans. You're mine, Neil - forever!!!

Of course, that lasted until these people popped up. And that oldest son? Damn. Pitter-pat went my young heart. Aside from the seriously doofy outfits (which were quite hip at the time), that was one fine-looking guy.

Partridge Family

I mean, what's not to like? Blue eyes, long hair, and the best smile ever!

David Cassidy2

Oh, yeah - and puka shell necklaces. Cool!

David Cassidy1

My cousin Liane and I used to have arguments over who was cuter - my crush David Cassidy or her crush: Donny Osmond.

Donny Osmond

I still think I won.

She still does that when we talk about David and Donny...

There was one more crush from that era... I had a poster of him on my wall. Not this one, but nice suit, no? 9 gold medals. And this was pre-performance enhancing drugs. (They were all still just psychodelic then). Can you guess who he is?

UPDATE: Everyone of a "certain age" nailed it - this is Mark Spitz - Olympic Gold Medal winner in the 1972 Olympics. And yes, I think the psychodelic drugs so popular at the time may have accounted for his suit...

Mark SPitz

But I must confess - if I had to pick one to define as my crush - it would have to be David Cassidy!

David Cassidy3

I told my husband about this Fun Monday... he asked if I felt silly about confessing my young-girl crushes. Well, yeah. I mean come on... it was the early 70s - they were ALL silly. Their clothes, if nothing else.

Ok. David Cassidy definitely cuter than Donny Osmond. But Mark Spitz? Seriously?

Thanks for sharing. Great memories.

Ahh..yes...David Cassidy..I had a crush on him also...but my main heart throb was Shaun Cassidy.

I was all about Donny, but David was a close third. You know...because my #1 (and first) love was Bobby.

Since you have SO MANY, HE'S MINE, SISTAH! BACK!OFF!!

**Ducks head in abject shame** Yes. Mark Spitz. To this day I still don't understand what was going on in my head.

Oh, I can see Mark Spitz, but he was way too grown up.

Love the hair...those were the days!

David Cassidy I'd say, you win over your cousin. I did't tell my hubby about the challenge on this one I didn't want to hear his comments....

Thanks for your comment on my post. My Fun Monday is up now.

Mark Spitz???? LOL! Whatever happened to him anyway?

I never fell into the David Cassidy thing. I've always been a non-conformist and if everyone in school was hot for someone, I'd make a point of NOT liking that person at all. I did meet Shaun Cassidy's MIL last year and she's a very nice lady. Not that that has to do with anything...

Yeah, I can say now that David was a hottie and I DID watch the Partridge Family religiously.

You win big time. David cassidy is Cuuuuuute.

Thanks for a blast from the past. But it's that little Red head who is still on the Tellie. (eveyone enjoys a good train wreck).

I'll tell you like I told Robin.... Bobby's all mine, sweetie!! (see our post today...)
David Cassidy was my 2nd choice, then Donny Osmond. I think I bought all the teen magazines with my allowance, so I could plaster my wall with the posters from them.

I just came over from Robin's site (and after I read my wife's post) and I am a little weirded out by knowing that three different fully-grown, mature women have decided that Bobby Sherman was their fantasy. Personally, I thought D Cassidy had it altogether because he always had the girls in his sitcom. NLL and I also saw David Cassidy and Sheena Easton performing together in Vegas a few years back - he (and she still sounded good... Maybe this will be he end of the madness. NLM

I bet that was awesome getting to check out all those songs!
David Cassidy! Yes, that was the good ole days!

David Cassidy beats Donny Osmond hands down. Of course I could write an entire post about how much I can't stand Donny Osmond so maybe I'm not the right person to voice an opinion on this. :-)

I'd never heard of Bobby Sherman before tonight but he's quite the popular guy as I'm reading posts. He was pretty cute!

David beat Donny then, and Still Does! Mark Spitz... well there WAS the suit. I had a crush on Greg Louganis myself!

I think one of my daughters had a Donny Doll.

I think David Cassidy had the look, the sound...

Oh yes, David Cassidy, mmmm!
Definitely not Donny Osmond, nononono!
And that necklace with the shells, oh yesssss, totally awesome!
Great post, I think this is going to be a very fun Monday today!

Neil Diamond? Really?!

You and Nekked Lizard Lady...Bobby Sherman?
Mark Spitz?
This is a riot and fun. Only problem is I'm in the era of dinosaurs...Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble aren't my ideas of guys to have celebrity crushes on.

Liane Michel said...

OMG, where did you dig up those pics of me and you???

I was never a Bobby fan... I still think Donny ruled. I heard Puppy Love on the radio last month (couldn't believe it was actually on in this day and age) and I cranked it up!!

Andy Gibb. Alas I was in love with Shaun Cassidy as well. But Andy was the first.

I only know Neil Diamond, the others were not known in Europe, he is very handsome and I like his music too. Is the 9 medal guy Mark Spitz ? The Olympia winner ? I never had a crash on somebody not even at 13 ! lol !

Cool! I did David Cassidy and Donnie Osmond too! And yeah, David is just pretty much beautiful.

Somebody else has probably already identified the swimming champion, Mark Spitz. Before Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, I would have agreed thatr David is much cuter than Donny. But, Donny is on fire as Joseph.

Kaytabug said...

Yeah, you win hands down David is by far cuter than Donnie. But I am with Nikki.

I loved the Bay City Rollers! I had almost forgotten all about them. Wasn't one of them name Ian? Oh, those were the days....

Wow, I'm smiling the whole time...and half-chuckling as I scroll down and stare at those photos...I'm trying to imagine...my time is a bit later so I can only imagine and try to remember what I heard about them...and then Robin like Bobby Sherman too!

Neil Diamond...yes indeedy!! [the others are too young for me tho. LOL]

I had trouble with this week’s topic too. I was raised in such a conservative Dutch family that we weren’t permitted to watch much TV or listen to popular music. I’ve had more than my share of ‘mid-life’ crushes …(LOL)… but drew a total blank for my teenage years. I’ve sure enjoyed visiting everyone else’s Fun Monday today ;--)

Oh I'm with you for Neil Diamond--have some very bad concert photos--those black pocketless pants. . .how many times did you see the Jazz Singer? Who cares if it got lousy reviews.

Re husband's question--never too old to have a crush.

Jan said...

Yeah, you won over cousin Liane, hands down. Great post, and love the pics.

Whew!! I'm getting a sugar buzz!!! Mark Spitz was amazing, wasn't he?

David trumps Donnie, ANY DAY! I totally remember the original Spitzer...hw was something in the water! WOW!

I'm so glad you explained that those were gold medals. I couldn't see that well with the small pic. My first thought was, "My God! Why does that man have a pantyliner stuck to his stomach?!?" I'm so glad to know I was wrong.

I remember thinking both David and Donny were cute though I never had any huge celebrity crushes.
