Fun Monday - Grease is NOT the Word

Emily and Jennifer at Mothers of Brothers volunteered to host this week. Their challenge:
Choose your favorite words or words. And the trouble is - it’s hard to choose. We bloggers love all words. But luckily, these are words and not people so we don’t have to worry about offending the words we didn’t choose.

They are right. I LOVE words. And amazingly enough, one word did pop into my head as soon as I read the challenge.
Supercilious

Adjective
1. Having or showing arrogant superiority to and disdain of those one views as unworthy; "some economists are disdainful of their colleagues in other social disciplines"; "haughty aristocrats"; "his lordly manners were offensive"; "walked with a prideful swagger"; "very sniffy about breaches of etiquette"; "his mother eyed my clothes with a supercilious air"; "shaggy supercilious camels"; "a more swaggering mood than usual"- W.L.Shirer.
2. Expressive of contempt; "curled his lip in a supercilious smile"; "spoke in a sneering jeering manner"; "makes many a sharp comparison but never a mean or snide one".

It just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? Super-silly-ous. And if you use it correctly, you can have the last word AND leave them scratching their heads.

I'm not sure why this word was the first one to come to me. I've spent the whole week thinking of other words, but this one keeps coming back. Perhaps it's the fact that it's election year.

Supercilious is a word I don't use, I'll have to remedy that.

Most excellent choice. I do however disagree: Grease is the word.

Since I'm constantly in the world of Jane Austen, your "supercilious" sounds perfectly everyday to me. Even in modern day we still have people who deserve to be described as supercilious. Just need to use it in one more sentence and it's mine!

Love that word! And I dont think I have ever used it in a sentence despite a myriad (and plethora) of opportunities to do so!! The first choice is always the best - Im glad you stuck with this one. Thanks for sharing your words -- today and going forward!!

Supercilious is a good word. Your word reminded me of another favorite word, superfluous.

Supercilious is a GREAT word, but I always get it confused with something dealing with fuzzy, fringed amoeba.

Interesting choice … especially the way it kept returning to your mind. I wish I’d been so fortunate. Your word DOES have a wonderful sound to it!

How close are you to Orlando? I'm possibly considering a trip to Florida in October.
