Georgia on my mind

ZBoy and I went out to the farm today. It had been a while since our last visit. We played with the dog, took the new golf cart out for a spin, found a geocache on the property next door. I brought squash with me, which my mom fixed Lujetter-style (yum) to go with baked chicken and corn casserole.

I took home three dozen fresh eggs, 5 peppers and 4 eggplants from the garden.

And since we were so close to the state line and cheaper gas, I decided to head north to the truck stop just across the line.

"Why didn't we turn, Mom?"

"I'm going up the road to get gas, honey." This was met with a heavy silence. "Why? Is something the matter?"

"I really don't want to go to Georgia, Mom... They're fighting there."

Ah. He'd seen just enough news to know about the bombing and fighting going on in Georgia - the one over by the Russians, not OUR Georgia. But he's 9. He doesn't know the difference. He doesn't know that there's more than one Georgia in this world. No wonder he didn't want to go!

He got a very short lesson in geography and an explanation of the situation over there as we crossed the state line.

After we'd filled up and were safely back in Florida, he said that he thought it might be neat to see a tank on the street though. And I explained why it WOULDN'T be neat. Somehow that morphed into a conversation about occupation and then slavery.

One day, a road trip with this kid is going to be a lot of fun!!!

Poor ZBoy! It must be hard for little kids to hear things like that about Georgia and think it's "our" Georgia. I wonder how many kids in that state had freak outs??

Yum, squash! My favorite veggie! Sounds like you had a good time and ate some really good food, too. Nice to be able to bring home fresh eggs. Wish we could have our own chickens here!

Fun post. Yes, they are amazing. At least, he was aware of trouble some where; some Georgia.

I'm impressed he knew about that. I myself, have only read about Russia and Georgia's fighting today, on msn.com a few hours ago...you've got a clever young man there!!

Heh, reminds me of when I was a kid, and my out-of-town best friend was extremely concerned by news reports of armed conflict in Panama City, not realizing it is also the capital of Panama.

I can see how a little one could get confused by it. It was confusing to me the first time I heard it on the news.

Interesting that he didn't seem to care that THREE of his uncles are in Georgia! :D

Well, I think he figures you guys can take care of yourselves... I mean between a high-ranking Army guy and a policeman (just make sure James doesn't break anything ELSE), I imagine he's fairly confident that you'll be okay.
