BIG Turkey

Thanksgiving is one week away. I believe I have mentioned that I will be having TWELVE people for the big day. That's a lot of people for my house, but I think we can manage. I bought the turkey. He's 22 lbs of frozen poultry, resting on the bottom shelf of my fridge. That sucker takes up a lot of room.

The last time I bought a turkey, I paid some outrageous price for it. This time, I watched the ads and found a store selling frozen ones for $.78/lb. Add to that the $5.00 off coupon I found in the same flyer and ta-da! A $13.00 turkey! Being as big as he is though, he's going to have to thaw for most of the week before Thanksgiving...

So there's a plan. SIL Cindy is going to bring sweet potato casserole and a berry cobbler of some sort. Her husband is doing a caesar salad. MIL is making oyster dressing to put inside the turkey. Stepson Kurt is going to do some kind of green bean casserole (but I don't know if it's going to be the one with the fried onions...). FIL offered to take my husband and a list to the store to buy supplies, but gee... DM is taking the kids camping this weekend, I'm busy helping my friend - and honestly, I just picked up some stuff at the store when I went for dog food because it was on sale and it was THERE. So really, all we need now is potatoes for mashing, milk and butter, a salt and pepper set (FIL doesn't seem to know what to do with the dish of salt we usually put out) and some rolls. Oh, and pie. We need to make pies.

And as of a couple of days ago, my parents learned that they would have an influx of people just after Thanksgiving. My niece and nephews are coming down from Macon, two brothers arriving from Atlanta, and Cousin P is stopping by for a couple of days on her way back south from the mountains. Looks like TG2008, Part Deux is happening at the Farm on Saturday. So much for their quiet little holiday serving food to the homeless. They're still going to do it on The Day, but now they get to have the other bit too! Whew!

And we haven't even begun to think about Christmas. The people juggling will continue.

Oh, and for those of you who know how much I love to dress up... at the cub scout meeting tonight, the boys turned me into a turkey - using a sanding mask, a trash bag, a red bow, mulit-colored tissue paper, and masking tape. I then had to stand up on the stage with three other turkeys and gobble. I don't have any pictures, but I was assured that they would wind up on the local Boy Scout website. Great.

Of course, I probably looked better than THAT guy!

YUM. I am skipping thanksgiving feast this year. But will eat what I want (go to grocery and pick favorite things) and watch tv and movies in pjs and do nothing. And be grateful for stuff, of course. Ha ha.

I treid to get my family to make a few different things this year, and...um...it didn't go over too well. People get so hung up on tradition. Geesh!

Anyway, when you have time, stop by my blog. I have something for you.

We're going the traditional route and, wonder of wonders, have done all the shopping and the turkey is sitting in the fridge slowly thawing out...

Don't know why, but I'm in a pie mood this year...so I'm doing 3 of them...traditional pumpkin of course, plus cherry with a lattice crust and for me, a coconut custard...I haven't had that in years and for some reason it's stuck in my brain so i added it to the list...Should be a fun day
