Strong like bull; Smart like Tractor...

After a mini-explosion of home demolition (we're working on the master bathroom), Darling Man took a break and watched the Duke vs. FSU basketball game on ESPN. Duke won, of course (they're DUKE). I passed through the family room a while afterwards and DM was still watching TV.

There was a really, really big guy tossing pony kegs over his head and over a 15-foot wall. Apparently this is an actual sport.

Intrigued in spite of myself, I sat down to watch the final three shows that comprised the finale of the 2008 MetRx World's Strongest Man Competition.

There were some pretty wacky challenges: Pulling a 50,000 lb. semi truck. Carrying a 495 lb. cylinder up concrete stairs. Deadlifting a Jeep.

The keg-throwing man was an American named Travis Ortmayer from Texas. I was really rooting for him until the Atlas Stones competition, which he did with his shirt off and both nipple rings showing. Sorry, but... ewwww.

The winner of the competition was a Polish man named Mariusz Pudzianowski. He was smaller than the other guys, but apparently a bit stronger. He cinched his fifth straight win in a row by pulling an 88,000 lb C-130 the fastest of the 10 finalists. Winning the Atlas Stone event was icing on the cake.

Second place went to Derek Poundstone (shown during an Atlas Stone challenge). His comment on coming in second? "I have 365 days to have nightmares about this before I try to win again next year."

Of all the finalists, there was one Polish man, one Norse man, one Estonian guy, a German and everyone else was from the USA. We seem to have the corner on really big (over 6 feet, over 300 lbs) lumpy white guys who come really, really close.

When it ended, I changed the channel to my real favorite athletic program, Ninja Warrior on G4. This is a different kind of athleticism. The competition is an intense obstacle course. These people are strong, but also wiry, agile and graceful. There are "All-Stars" who are regulars. 60 year old Octopus man, the Gas Station Manager, the Fireman, the brothers who are professional trampoline artists... And of course, Japan's hottest transvestite athlete:

Ha..ha..ha... BOTH of those shows are classic! :)

The Ninja Warrior show blows me away because there are guys who quit their jobs and train strictly to be on this show. Really? I mean, they don't make any money for winning, so wow!!

Soooo....how'd the demolition go today? :D

Toilet out. Vanity out. Medicine chest out. Wallpaper completely down.

I went and got a new vanity and medicine cabinet, a light fixture and faucet (we already had a replacement toilet in the garage). I unloaded those from the car and when DM was done with his part, I started sanding and patching the walls. And realized that it would have to dry overnight before I could do primer, so that's when I went downstairs and discovered the Strongest Man in the World. Tomorrow should see sanded, primed and painted walls. Toilet will go in on Monday and the tile will probably be finished then too. You can be sure there will be a post about all of this later...

Those two guys don't even look real...

Once we get to your neck of the woods, we'll be traveling through Pensacola onto Valdosta, GA...not sure how north you are. Wanna have coffee?

I love Ninja Warrior!

is your version commentated by Stuart Hall? Because he's one of the best bits of the show for me. Especially the way he says "NINja Warrior!"

So your doing the bathroom now, you always seem to be working hard at something in that house! Me, I finally managed to clean up under the stair case! I even found the floor! LOL!

Um....really interesting half-naked guys, Sayre.

Have you ever seen Vin Diesel without his shirt on? Now THAT'S a picture worth lookin' at!

Have a great week!

Hahaha...I like Ninja Warrior too! Who's the fishing boat captain? Makoto Nagano, I think? He's pretty amazing. I liked the ladies' version too. I also liked Unbeatable Banzuke - not sure if that's still on.

And yay for the remodeling! I'm sure it's a big pain while it's happening, but it'll all be worth it!

The top guy looked like Andy before the hair thing. Had him here tossing about bloody great logs that run close to 100# each. they split down to 5 fireplace logs, in other words. In his case, Strong like Bull, way smarter than tractor. Actually I drive the tractor. dad

He does look like a little guy, cool!

Remodeling is rarely fun but usually feels so good when you're done. :)
