Fun Monday - Counters

Ari is our hostess this week, peeking out from Beyond Her Slab and into our kitchens.

Topic: It's time for show and tell. What does your kitchen counter look like right now? (And no fair cleaning just for the picture!) Do you have any favorite or unusual items on your counter?

I didn't actually clean for this picture. I try to keep it pretty neat and clean already. See that countertop? It's WHITE. And the backsplash? It's WHITE. And the floor? Oh. No, you can't see that, but guess what? It's WHITE. All of which means that if you don't keep it clean, it really looks awful! When I get around to redoing my kitchen, guess what's the first thing to go?
WHITE COUNTERTOPS, WHITE BACKSPLASH, WHITE FLOOR.

So... what do we have here? My white microwave (which I actually don't mind), my block of knives, which I bought myself just last month, a spagetti jar full of chopsticks (the husband's preferred eating utensils), a white (geez, what is it with me and white?) jar with whisks and wooden spoons in it. They're sitting on top of a glass-like cutting board. The only truly interesting thing in this picture is the spoon rest, which was given to me by my Puerto Rican aunt probably 25-30 years ago. She sent it to me from Puerto Rico and it's the only thing she's ever sent me from there. She died of breast cancer over ten years ago. I use the spoon rest everyday though, and think of her.

Now this counter looks a little messier. My husband had just finished eating pizza with all the accoutrements - hot sauce, salt and pepper. A glass of wine with pizza is a must. And a cherry pie from Whataburger. He left his glasses behind, along with a dishtowel, a thing of ketchup and a wadded up napkin. The stuff that actually belongs on that counter are the bread box with my favorite cookbook leaning up against it, the flashlight, the glass jar I collect box tops for education in, coffee filters, the papertowel holder and the coffee maker.

There are more countertops - but I didn't take pictures of them. There's an old stove with a small toaster oven and cutting boards next to it, and there's the counter with the stainless steel sink in it. I thought I took a picture of that, but it wasn't there when I downloaded the pictures. Very odd. There's a window over the sink that looks out to the back yard and my fish Boo lives there. I know I took that picture.... Perhaps I'll update this later after I go take another picture.

Your kitchen items are similar to mine. I would feel at home in your kitchen. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Nice to see that the important things like a wine glass are kept nice and handy! LOL

How great to have the spoon rest from your aunt. I agree about the white, too hard to keep presentable.

I hear you about the pain that white floors can be in the kitchen, especially with dogs, and, in your case, small boys. I could hardly wait to get rid of the white flooring in the kitchen. I'm curious as to why you need a flashlight in the kitchen? I keep mine hidden where I can't find it in case of a power outage!

I hear you on the white, it shows every spect of dust n dirt. I have all white cabinets in my kitchen and I am always wiping them down. Thanks for sharing and good luck with your remodel when you get ready.

Great story about the spoon rest, and what a wonderful way to remember someone special!

I hear ya about the white countertops - I have 'em too and try to stay on top of them. I got to "cheat" (sort of) this week because it so happened that the toaster oven died (boo hoo) and in the process of removing it, I cleaned in and around that area. Happy FM to you!

White makes everything look fresh and clean. I can assure you that is not a messy counter!

I think a white kitchen looks clean and crisp, even if there is a little dirt that only you can see! I have your same coffee maker in our upstairs bedroom. We have a coffee bar up there!

I think I'd like a white kitchen.
especially with a glass of red wine. Like a photo from a classy magazine.

Your kitchen looks crazy organized. My kitchen is a disaster- mainly due to some structural problems with the house. Trying to save up and remodel!
