All in the Family

We've had the crud here at Chez Smiles. It has NOT been fun. Much coughing, aching, feverish laying about has occurred, but we are beginning to show signs of life.

A couple of weeks ago, my brother Saturn sent me an email saying that one my grandfather's films was going to be on one of the Classic Movie networks, so I set my DVR to record and forgot about it.

Last night, with nothing on television and a mind that needed some kind of stimulation that didn't involve much effort, I was scrolling through my playlist and found "Beau Brummell".

I was rather surprised this morning to discover that it was a 1954 film as it had a much more 1939-1940 feel to it. Peter Ustinov looked so young (and so like my father!), and I believe that was the first time I saw Grandpa without silver hair.

Darling Man and I were watching this together when I began feeling like I was being watched. I turned my head and found DM studying my face intently.

Illness makes me so polite. I frowned at him. "Whaaaaatttt?"

"You have your grandpa's nose!"

Yes. I'm afraid I do. It looks marvelous on him, but a bit overwhelming on me. Good thing DM is a "nose" guy!

The first time I ever saw my new father-in-law was in the movie, "Our Man In Havana" He was the assassin. The first view of him was his hand only, but I recognized it immediately--it was just like your dad's hand. "Genes will out", as my grandmother used to say.

I've been cursed with my fathers nose too. Let's put it this way, he was called "Banana nose" when he was in elementary school. Nice, huh?

I wrote about him briefly in the Fun Monday about Harold Pinter's cup. My grandfather is Paul Rogers. Not so well known here in the states unless you were hanging out around broadway a lot during the sixties and seventies or watched Hallmark Hall of Fame movies in the 80s. However, he was a very active stage actor both here and in London where he makes his home.

The Crud? Is that what it's called? Hmmm Cruddy is very apt I suppose. 3 weeks into it we still have one with ear/throat, one sneezing all over the place, me losing my voice (what a shame, hehe!) two little boys running away so they won't get it. One little 4 year old blowing snot bubbles (Karisma does NOT DO SNOT!) My friend I was dry retching for a good 10 minutes while the boys laughed their obnoxious little heads off! Did either of them grab a tissue? Of course NOT! They were enjoying the show too much! Poor little snot kid just sat there looking confused till I could compose myself enough to clean him up! Words with his mama ensued afterwards and SHE laughed at me too! How rude! LOL! Seriously snot is disgusting! Now what were you saying about family????????? (And peoples wonder why I am taking a blog break! I am totally dying over here!)

Heehee! I love to point out my genetic oddities to my parents(flat feet, thanks Dad; dicey knees, thanks Mom; severe nearsightedness, thanks to both of 'em) and I try to tell them that they owe me a Mercedes as compensation. It never flies :-)

Kidding of course. I hope you feel better soon! I also have some version of "the crud". I can't tell if it's ending or moving into Phase II :-( Come on, Spring!

P.S. Oops, I wanted to reply to your comment on my sewing post. You mentioned dressmaker's dummies - I ordered mine through my local fabric store a few years ago. However, I got discouraged and hadn't sewn for myself since I got it! This is actually my first time using it, and so far, so good.

A friend who is a WAY better seamstress than I am, has sung the praises of the "My Twin Dressform". I think there's a website that you can google. It is one step better than the regular dressmaker's dummy because it is made from an actual casting of your own body. It's pricier too, so I'm waiting to see how these inital projects go before I decide about the My Twin. Just wanted to tell you!
