The Music in Him

When my boy was very little, he loved to listen to me sing. It's not something I do in front of other people much, though I do it fairly well. He had a favorite song by Sarah McLaughlin that was his lullaby. Every night as I tucked him into bed, he'd ask for "'Member Me" and I would lie down next to him in the full-sized bed he slept in because he wandered when he slept. And I would sing to him until he relaxed into sleep.

As he got older, the songs in the car would be the theme songs from PBS kids' programs. Dragon Tales, Teletubbies, Reading Rainbow and Between the Lions.

When he began elementary school, we moved on to more contemporary music, his favorite being Faith Hill. "Breathe", "The Way You Love Me", and "This Kiss".

These days he's into all kinds of music... The stuff he goes for on YouTube ranges from Weird Al to the theme from Jurassic Park to Zac Brown's Chicken Fried.

But he doesn't just want to listen to music anymore... he wants to MAKE it. Since he was a tiny baby, he's been listening to me sing and to his daddy playing guitar. He's been plinking on the piano I inherited from my mom since he could reach the keyboard and recently figured out how to play the Jurassic Park theme by ear.

He wants more.

Yesterday, he went to his first Strings class at school. The tiny violin we got him a few years ago didn't fit anymore, so we rented a 3/4 violin and bought a music stand and the book for the class. And on the way home from work yesterday, he called me. I asked him how Strings went and he replied in a rather droopy voice, "oh, well, I have to tell you..." then his voice got whispery and intense... "it was AAAWE-SOME!"

I may have an actual musician on my hands.

Good for him! Now let's just hope for your sake he doesn't decide he wants to play the drums LOL

You laugh, but that particular request has already been made. It would be okay with me, actually. My cousin has made quite a nice living playing the drums!
