Fun Monday - Remembering those who gave their lives

Fun Monday has taken a patriotic turn this week, given that Fun Monday is also Memorial Day. Our host, The Church Lady set forth this challenge which is both easy and difficult:
the assignment is to post a photo of something patriotic or post a photo honoring a veteran.

When I was a girl of about 12, my grandmother took me to Washington, DC. She attended a conference for some of that time and the rest of that time was spent touring our nation's capital. One of the places she took me was Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington. It was beautiful and sat high up on a hill so you could see for miles and miles and miles.

Standing at the edge of the hill, looking down, this is what I could see - for miles and miles and miles, it seemed... Little white gravestones of fallen soldiers.

They seemed to go on forever. Even at that young age, with little experience of war or veterans, it touched me and tugged at my heart. Every one of those pieces of stone represented someone's son, someone's father, someone's love, someone's friend, someone's brother. I realized that then and remember it now.

Even if you don't go to a parade or fly a flag, stop for a moment today and think of the sacrifice all those sons, daddies, husbands, friends and brothers made so that we can be free today.

Go visit The Church Lady for this week's participants and see what patriotic scenes they come up with! Also, if you're so inclined - we need a host for next week. Please volunteer over at Church Lady's blog or here!

This Area of the Northeast is so rich in American History and most of the people are very patriotic...we are just 18 miles from Gettysburg and 50 miles from Washington D.C.and Mt. Vernon and Arlington National cementary. I think that all school age kids here in the U.S.A. should visit both places...they need to know about the scarifices that were made for our precious way of life! Happy Memorial Day to you n yours Sayre!

Very moving article in today's paper about a Belgium woman who has "adopted" the grave of a WW II American soldier at the Henri-Chapelle Cemetery and Memorial. The American soldier was from eastern KY mountains. Family had only his Purple Heart, no idea where buried until the Belgium woman contacted them. Comforting to know that someone cares and remembers.
