Fun Monday - After the Big One

Roger is wrapping his month of hosting Fun Monday with a post-apocalyptic poser:

This week's challenge is going to be about a post-apocalyptic world. Doesn't that sound like fun? Anyway, here is the deal... You knew that the end was coming and prepared yourself for it. In one scenario, you have fashioned a cave into a home for yourself, safe from all the bad stuff on the outside, and you have stocked enough supplies to last for a minimum of twenty years figuring that would be as long as it would take for the bad stuff to clear. In scenario number two, you have acquired a fifty foot boat, yacht if you'd like, and have prepared it in the same manner. The cave has a natural stream flowing through it, and the boat has a desalination device on board, so water will not be a problem.

Your challenge is to pick one of the scenarios and explain why you chose one over the other. See how easy that is? By the way - you cannot bring the boat ashore and you are not able to come out of your cave.

I made the mistake of visiting a few of the participants before writing my own, which is swaying me....  My first inclination was to go with the cave.  I don't mind a lack of light (I burn so easily!) and I have always gotten horribly seasick when out on my dad's sailboat.  So I felt pretty confident that the cave would be my home for the next 20 years.

Then I read about sunshine and growing things (which appeals to me even though I am terrible when it comes to growing stuff).  It was almost enough to make me change my mind and go for the yacht.

But then I thought about it some more, and I'm back in my cave.  Because this is going to happen in the future and I have time to prepare, I'll include in my cave some natural lights (and a way to power them) which will allow me to grow things and not get too depressed.  I will also paint my cave so that I can have some "outside" time that will include towering forests and ocean views.  I like to look - just not be ON the ocean.  I won't get too hot or burned; I'll have fresh food, clean water and I won't get sick just existing on my stone floor.

So, yes.  I'm a cave person after all!

Good attitude, Sayre, this will happen in the future, and you will have time to prepare. In the 1960's, some houses were built with bomb shelters. Some people even put food and water in their shelters. Gratefully, the bomb shelters were not ever needed unless some were used as shelter during bad weather. Maybe someday we humans will learn to get along so that there will be no need to hide in caves or live on ships.

Awesome! We can all start our own little underground communities. :)

Thanks for participating!
