Just Fishin' Friday

Jill has come up with a new meme for Fridays, directed mostly at parents.  You can write about something great that happened (Fist Bump Friday) or something that will make memories (Just Fishin' Friday) but whichever you choose to write about, it should involve your kid(s).  UPDATE:  Jill tells me that Fist Bumps can be for non-parents too!  Did something great this week?  Or just really enjoyed something?  Write about it!  And sign up!

I've chosen to go with Just Fishin' this week.

My boy and I spend a lot of time together.  Most of it is nice, some is not, and none of it is particularly remarkable.  But one of the daily things we do together is go to meet his bus on school day mornings.

Being an almost-teen, mornings when he has to get up are not easy.  He doesn't want to wake up, and once up, he's usually kind of grumpy.  And slow.  He takes forever to eat his breakfast.  Forever to get dressed.  I never knew brushing your teeth could take so long.  Sometimes I snap at him, he grumbles back and we're both a bit crabby when we get in the car to meet the bus at the mall a few minutes away.

But a little miracle happens on the drive and during the wait.  We start talking.  What's happening at school today?  What are you looking forward to?  What shall we do after school?  The bus is somewhat erratic in when it arrives, so sometimes we pull up and the bus is sitting there winking at us and other times we're sitting there for 10 minutes.  I love the 10-minute wait.

We talk.  Sometimes he'll pull his phone out and we'll record us singing or making strange noises.  He discovered that when he burps into the phone, it sounds like a frog (that's now his ringtone).  When he's alone or feeling bad, sometimes he pulls his phone out and listens to us being silly and it makes him feel better.

By the time we get out of the car, we're both happy.  We say "I love you" before the door slams (because boys his age can't close anything without slamming it) and I watch my boy-turning-man get on the bus.  I know this time won't last.  Before I know it, he'll be driving himself around and won't need me for that anymore, so I cherish our car time - and I think he does too.

Got a fist bump or fishing story?  Sign up and leave your link at Jill's place so other people can come visit YOU!

I am jealous! I used to schedule car time with my grandson because it was like the only time I had his undivided attention and we didn't have to be accomplishing anything other than getting where we were going. I miss it...and you are so wise to cherish it.

the fistbumps are there for non-parents or people who want to talk about work or spouses or crafting, or whatever!

thanks for playing, and I LOVE this -- we always walked down our lane to the bus (or ran if we were late or them early), and rarely got a ride... so the walk down was very peaceful all alone.. sometimes! listening to the quiet of the trees blowing and so on...
