Roger at A Screed in Time has asked us to tell him our favorite movie based on the Bible.
I recently started taking my son to church. Usually, he brings a book and reads for most of the service. Lately he's been setting the book down during the sermon and sometimes he talks to me about it later. But today, he forgot his book.
It's Palm Sunday. At breakfast, we were handed little palm frond crosses and we had a processional from the parish hall to the church, re-enacting Jesus's entrance to Jerusalem. My son doesn't really know the stories of Jesus. I had to explain to him what the palm fronds signified, that it was the beginning of the end.
He paid attention as the long passage from the Gospel of Matthew was read by several people detailing the trial and crusfixion. It was like a light went on... he is starting to understand.
The Bible is sometimes impenetrable by people who aren't used to the language - and I thought while listening that perhaps he would see more, understand more if the gospel were presented by Andrew Lloyd Webber...
There are lots of movies based on stories from the Bible, but really, this is one of my all time favorites.
I think I may share this with my boy. I have it on DVD. Perhaps then he will see the story more easily and what he hears in church will make more sense..

I love that movie, thanks for reminding me. Saw it at a large theatre. The audience left in total silence at the end.
Jesus Christ Superstar is a wonderful choice. I usually play our soundtrack several times during the Lenten/Easter season. Last year, I was fortunate to see a stage version of the musical; it was tremendous.
I agree with you Sayre..JC superstar is perfect to help explain the events leading up to the Crucifixtion. Kids are very receptive to learning by way of music.
Music is a powerful vehicle in feeling the spirit. How wonderful to share this week with your son. Kids pay attention more often than you know.
Don't you just love the soundtrack too? This would be a great movie to show kids to give them a better understanding of Jesus' last days on Earth.
JC Superstar is a great start, and a little easier for younger ones to handle, and I agree that music is a wonderful learning tool. Thanks for participating, maybe I'll finally get my entry up today. :)
