Vacation time!!!!
It's Sunday morning, 4 weeks before school starts and it's vacation time! No beaches or amusement parks for me - I'm going SHOPPING!
Today is the beginning of Florida's 1 week-long Back to School Tax Free Holiday. Pencils, pens, glue sticks, notebooks, clothes, shoes - all tax free this week! I am SO ready!
If you know me, you know that there are three kinds of stores I could spend all day in... book store, hardware/home improvement store, and office supply stores! (Clothes stores are on my list of "to avoid" stores). So this week is my version of shopping heaven. I have Z-boy's school supply list all ready. I'm making lists in my head of shoes and clothes he's going to need and thinking how to arrange his room to accomodate the desk he's going to be using for homework. I LOVE BACK-TO-SCHOOL!
Times like these, I wish I was going back to school. In the grade-school sense. Fresh, clean paper, the smell of new pencils being sharpened, the first word out of a ball-point pen. The discoveries that await behind the beat-up binding of old school books and meeting the teacher who will be telling me things I've never even thought of before and opening up my world to include those new, and sometimes old, ideas.
It is with a mix of dread and anticipation that I send my son off to his new school this year. And just a little bit - I wish I were in his shoes.

I kind of love the smell of new school supplies...
I love office supply stores too! Thanks for commenting/signing my guestbook. Pleasure to have you visit.
I know what you mean about the look of new paper and supplies! I'm always excited when my kids' homeschool books come in, but by mid-year, we're sick to death of them, lol.
I know exactly how you feel.
I still remember the anticipation of buying a new Trapper Keeper (do they still make those?) and color coding my classess- green for science, orange for composition/language arts, and of course BLOOD RED for MATH.
My favorite before school purchase was always the notebooks. Oh, the notebooks. Plain ol' MEAD college ruled notebooks (even in grade school I hated the big spaced notebook paper; I don't have cute loopy girl handwriting (never did), I have teeny scrawly unreadable and often trailing off the line handwriting). I'd mark the subject in the cover by using my eraser to 'write' in white on the cover- MATH, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS.
Confession: I always ended up buying a compass and a protractor too, but only used them once, in the fourth grade. For about a week each. I never understood why they were on the list every year.
Confession II: I owned a Lassie lunch box. And I loved it. Because my dog looked like Lassie.
I had several lunchboxes over the years. I can't remember what they were (though I think one was a Star Trek one - yes even a nerd back then), but I can remember how they smelled.
Last Christmas, I was shopping for gifts when I stumbled across a nostalgia store. They had metal Elvis lunchboxes. I couldn't resist - I had to open one. It smelled just like metal and peanut butter, just like I remembered.
