Fun Monday - Words to Live By

Robin (who's gazing into her Pensieve) is hosting Fun Monday this week. Her challenge is summed up in six words... with some explanation added on:

Quotable quotes and words that inspire.

Please share words that inspire and motivate you--brief or bloviatory, silly or serious, from great world leaders to last night's Comedy Central...from a Hallmark greeting card to your favorite book. Choose one, choose many; let the quotes stand on their own or tell where you first read or heard them and how they affected you. There's a lot of leeway with how this topic can be handled.

Okay!!! I have to admit that the first ones that popped into my head come from one of the great sages of all time:

yoda

Do or do not. There is no try.
Yoda
Jedi Master (a long time ago...)

And then, there's the man that many of the 25 and younger set don't even seem to believe was a real person (but that Sherlock Holmes was):
churchill
We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
Sir Winston Churchill
British politician (1874 - 1965)

And now, a somewhat obscure Welshman (who happened to win the Nobel Prize in Literature) from the home county:

snowdonia

The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people are full of doubts.
Bertrand Russell
Writer and Philosopher (1872 - 1970)

And finally, a complete unknown:
scan0003

You cannot begin to really find yourself until you have been lost.
Sayre
(1962 - )

Sayre, your quote is so wise from such a young woman. Lately I've been doing a lot of thinking about how incomplete our life education is until we have had some tests and lost our direction.

Wow, these are fab, and your picture is stunning, and your quote is very true. I've learned that myself over the last couple of years.

i love you quote best of all and I completely believe in it!
Looking back, I have found much clarity and purpose when I have been completely lost in the dark.
ANd your picture, so exquisite. I love the old world expression on your face. Its the type you find in paintings in a museum.

hey sayre,
this is a reply to what you asked on my blog.
Traditionally in my community, we wear White or off-white to the church (since we are all virgins before marriage :)) and colour to the reception (usually red or something like that - I don't know what the symbolism is for that - I guess once the church blesses you, you can go out there and do whatever you want?)
Its different for the Hindus, for whom the wedding ceremony has to be in colour and for whom white at a wedding is a bad colour.
Hope that helps :)
Oh, I am going to take what you wrote about the bad news sniper to heart - and move forward with optimism, a well-lived life and lots of love.
THANK YOU!

I love the Russell quote! That's a keeper!

Well, according to Russell, I must be the wisest person in the world! I constantly doubt myself.

Love your quote and portrait.

Ah, you have to love a politician who didn't care if everyone knew how much whiskey he got through in a day.

OK, is it just me, or do Yoda and Winston look a whole lot alike!
I do love the Churhill quote, and thank you for sharing that. I would say some more nice things, except no one should be allowed to be so young and pretty. So. I'm going to sleep.

all the best-

How gorgeous is that photo, and the quote to go with it. Awesome. I also love the Bertand Russel quote. And Yoda and Winston Churchill, well you just outdid yourself. Great job.

Thanks for your visit to my first Fun Monday on Quotes at Small Reflections and leaving the link back here. I loved your Yoda image and quote ... and the way you illustrated each of the others with photos … ending with your own. How very beautiful … and brave ;--)

I also did a little ‘clicking’ around your blog and enjoyed learning a bit more about you (the ‘because I’m tired’ post was fun) and your family (the photos of eyes was cool). Phrases like … “I hate clutter, but am surrounded by it. Much of it by my own making’ and “My perfectionist tendencies show up in odd places’ (although the ‘specifics’ vary) … resonate vividly with my own life so I’ve added you to my Google Reader and will return as time permits.

Happy ‘belated’ birthday to you!
Hugs and blessings,
